How to care for your jewellery
Your jewellery is designed for daily wear. A few simple habits will help preserve its shine and finish for longer. Here you will find our advice on cleaning, wearing and storing your jewellery from astrid&agnes.
Small habits that make a difference
Your jewellery is part of your everyday life. A little care helps keep your favourites looking their best, wear after wear.
Last on, first off
Allow perfume, moisturiser and hairspray to dry before putting on your jewellery. Take it off when you get home and avoid spraying products directly onto your pieces.
Remove before showering or swimming
We recommend removing your jewellery before showering, bathing, swimming or using a sauna. This reduces exposure to soap, salt water, chlorine and heat, helping to preserve the finish.
Give your jewellery a break
Remove your jewellery before sleeping, exercising or cleaning. Avoid contact with hard surfaces and heavy lifting that could scratch your pieces or put them under pressure.
Cleaning tips for each material
A clean, soft cloth goes a long way. Choose a cleaning method suited to the material and avoid scrubbing or using harsh cleaning products.
If your jewellery combines several materials, follow the advice for the most delicate one. You will find the materials listed in the product description.
Surgical stainless steel
Wipe your stainless steel jewellery with a soft cloth to remove traces of moisturiser, make-up and natural oils from your skin.
For jewellery made entirely from unplated stainless steel, you can use a cloth lightly dampened with lukewarm water and a little mild soap when needed. Remove any soap residue with a clean, lightly dampened cloth, then dry the jewellery thoroughly.
14K gold plating & black plating
Gently wipe plated jewellery with a clean, soft cloth. If needed, the cloth can be lightly dampened. Dry the jewellery afterwards.
Avoid silver polish, abrasive polishing products and cloths treated with cleaning agents. Protect the surface from friction and hard objects that could cause scratches.
Freshwater pearls
Gently wipe pearls with a very soft, clean cloth after wearing. Keep them away from perfume, hairspray and high temperatures.
Store pearl jewellery separately from other pieces to prevent scratches. Never use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner on jewellery with pearls.
Crystals & stones
Gently wipe jewellery with crystals or stones using a soft cloth. Avoid scrubbing around settings or pulling on details that could catch on the cloth.
Protect your jewellery from knocks and pressure. If a piece also contains pearls or leather, follow the care advice for those materials.
Genuine leather
Gently wipe leather with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid soaking the jewellery and keep the leather away from perfume and cleaning products.
If the leather becomes damp, leave it to air dry at room temperature. Avoid radiators, hairdryers and strong sunlight.
Vegan leather
Gently wipe the surface with a soft, lightly dampened cloth and leave it to air dry. Avoid soaking the jewellery.
Keep the material away from high temperatures, perfume and harsh cleaning products. Follow any specific care advice in the product description, as the composition of vegan leather can vary.
A place for every piece
Keep your jewellery protected when you are not wearing it. This helps reduce the risk of scratches and tangled chains.
Store separately
Keep your pieces in separate compartments in a jewellery box or in soft pouches. Take extra care with pearls and plated surfaces, which can be scratched by other jewellery.
Store somewhere dry
Avoid damp areas such as the bathroom and keep your jewellery away from heat sources and direct sunlight. Allow any damp pieces to dry before putting them away.
Avoid tangled chains
Fasten necklace and bracelet clasps before putting them away. Store chains separately, without folding or compressing them.
Jewellery care FAQs
Find answers to some common questions about caring for your jewellery.
Can I shower with my jewellery?
We recommend removing your jewellery before showering, bathing or swimming. Even durable pieces benefit from being protected from repeated exposure to soap, chlorine and salt water. This is especially important for jewellery with pearls or leather.
How often should I clean my jewellery?
Wipe jewellery you wear regularly with a soft cloth after use. Clean it gently when needed, for example if you notice traces of moisturiser or make-up. Always follow the advice for the material.
Can gold-plated jewellery show signs of wear over time?
Yes, even durable plating can show signs of wear. Changes to the surface depend on factors such as how often the piece is worn, the friction it is exposed to and the products it comes into contact with. Gentle cleaning and careful storage help preserve the finish for longer.
